The term “value chain” refers to the sequence of core business processes within an enterprise that generate customer value and for which customers are willing to pay. Companies have value chains - as do industries. For example, the sequence of events that convert wheat grains into loaves of bread in supermarkets represents an industry value chain involving the coordinated efforts of many different organizations.
The opportunities for significant innovation within a business generally reside in the value chain. Akili’s innovation planning services involve a structured collaboration with client senior leadership and focus on answering the following key questions:
- What operations lie along the firm’s value chain?
- Could/should any of these operations be outsourced and/or performed substantially differently? If so, what and how?
- Is there an opportunity to extend the existing value chain to encompass customers and/or trading partners? If so, what and how?
- What capabilities will be required in terms of people, processes, and systems in order to execute each of the identified innovation opportunities?
- What are the estimated benefits associated with each?
Identified improvement opportunities are grouped into executable units of work termed “initiatives”. Initiatives are categorized as either business initiatives or capabilities initiatives. Business initiatives are designed to deliver a specific business result. Capabilities related initiatives are designed to ensure that the firm has the necessary capabilities to succeed in terms of people, processes, and systems.
